Sweat production is essential for regulating body temperature. However, excessive sweating can be very burdensome in daily life. The most affected areas are the underarms, palms, and soles of the feet.
These areas can be temporarily treated with botulinum toxin-A, which reversibly blocks the nerves responsible for sweat production for about 4–6 months.
To achieve a permanent reduction in underarm sweating, the sweat glands can be scraped and suctioned out.
This procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia. Two to three small incisions are made around the hair-bearing areas of the underarms, the glands are suctioned out, and the incisions are sutured. After the operation, a compression bandage is applied to the underarm for two days.
